I’m really excited to tell you about this new Sheffield establishment – a board game cafe near London Road/Ecclesall Road area. A Sheffield first and what a great idea! Augustinas and I often get frustrated that when we get back from work there are basically no places to hang out that aren’t bars. Treehouse perfectly fits this gap – a place to hang out and drink coffee or alcohol, play games with friends and relax.
We made our first visit this weekend, as they had just opened on Saturday. With a business just opening, you expect teething issues and for certain aspects to be not ready or not slick yet. This wasn’t the case here, it felt so prepared and easy and well-thought out.
As you walk in you’re greeted by a large and light space with around 300 games lined up on the opposite wall. A fully stocked bar, loads of tables and lots of smiles from the staff. Check it out!
We were there for around 4 hours and it was busy but not noisy, so it made for a very fun and chilled Sunday afternoon. You could see families, groups of young friends and older people. Super inclusive!
As we visited in the daytime, we stuck to food and coffee, but they have some ales, lagers and ciders on tap and I believe fridges with wine, cans and some spirits as well. We’ll tell you more about that after an evening visit 😁
You pay a cover of £5 per head to play the games, which they say is for 4 hours but I think if the place was quiet, they wouldn’t mind you staying.
The current opening times are 11am-11pm Tuesday to Friday and 10am-11pm Saturday and Sunday. Closed Monday and food stops a little earlier.
An absolute must when visiting – talk to the lovely and knowledgable staff! We chatted to Ben and Chris, who patiently talked us through a number of games. Andy, one of the owners, also taught us a game. It really helps and makes you get into and enjoy a board game way quicker than if you were to try and learn it yourself.
Whilst you’re having fun with the games, make sure you don’t forget to order food! Here’s the food menu – a mixture of bar snacks, sharing platters, bagels, a few main meals, salads and grilled cheese. It pretty much covers you from brunch to evening, so no matter what time you visit you can get some fresh and tasty food.
We had: an original grilled cheese, beetroot salad, a pastrami, gherkin and emmental bagel, juices and a flat white. We liked all of it, no complaints! Also, they get their bagels from a guy called Jonny Bagels, which is just plain funny 😂
Like any good cafe, they also have a few delicious cakes. Plus they make a mean flat white, so there’s definitely no excuse not to eat aaaall the cake 😋
Verdict: an impressive knowledge of board games from all the chatty and friendly staff. Food and coffee is fresh, simple and tasty. Something completely different on the Sheffield scene!
Thanks for reading 😆
