We have been big fans of Peddler Market for a while now and we are really happy to watch it’s rise in popularity. The past few times that we’ve tried to go, it was hard to get in due to the amount of people, but this time we were on a mission. For those who don’t know, Peddler happens on the first weekend of every month in Kelham Island. This month’s market was of particular interest to us, as Peddler went veggie/vegan and we were not going to miss out. This time we had our friends Paul & Debbie and guess what, we got in!
We arrived at around 4pm and the atmosphere was already buzzing, with live music and amazing food all around you. The rainy weather certainly didn’t put anyone off! From kebabs and mezze to veggie balls, Indian and Chinese food – what else do you need? The biggest enjoyment for us was being able to choose from any of the food stalls. There’s nothing worse than going out to eat and only having one vegetarian option on the menu. But this time at Peddler, if you wanted meat, you would have to scratch your head a few times, as the veggies meals were dominating!
Colourful, Spicy & Soulful…
The variety of foods on offer were extensive. Indian curries, falafels, vegan hot dogs, steamed Chinese buns and more. But if you aren’t into spicy food or experimenting, you can always get veggie meatballs and they will never disappoint.
We have to talk about The Middle Feast food truck, Dim Sum Su – with Chinese street food (Chinese steamed buns with deep fried peppers, aubergine and tofu. Yum!) and Yakumama – Latin American street foodies. We sampled food from all of these and loved every mouthful. It is unusual to have food from a stall at a festival/event and it be packed with that much flavour and texture.
All of these guys work really hard to deliver such nice foods and it great to see veggie foods being so colourful and flavoursome. I hope we will see them around again. Make sure you give these guys a thumbs up when you see their events or food trucks.
Drinks and Desserts
Healthy, Juicy & Dairy Free…
Similar to the food stalls, you were spoiled for choice with drinks as well. Although Peddler is usually dominated by tap and craft beer and cocktails, if you look closely there are some hidden gems. And by that I mean Tap Garden – a small juicer and cocktail maker with 100% natural stuff. The hot fruit punch (with added ginger shot!) that we chose was fabulous.
Despite the awesome juice selection, there were plenty of cocktails, craft beers and basically everything you need. We tried some gin cocktails which tasted good, but as it was freezing outside, the hot fruit punch was probably a bit more satisfying. And if you want beer food, there is always Nether Edge pizza company around the corner! Who doesn’t like pizza after they’ve had a few beers?!
Another thing that I wouldn’t dare to miss out on is Froconut by Elly Joy. Gluten free, sugar free and dairy free. Froconut is so delish and a dessert you can enjoy guilt free. It’s quite important to mention Elly Joy, who is training for Ironman whilst still having these amazing treats. Hopefully one day I will sign up for an Ironman myself, but for now I will carry on with Froconut! Make sure you visit Elly Joy‘s website, as there are some great recipes and tips!
Crafty, Warm & Very Sheffield…
Last but not least, the independent craft sellers! These are a staple of Peddler market and they really summarise the Sheffield independent spirit. You’ve got candle makers, paintings and art work, t-shirt designers, flowers and jewellery. Something for everyone and definitely worth a browse whilst you are there.
This Peddler Market really showed how much and how fast it has grown. It is great to see Sheffield hosting these kind of events and celebrating the local and independent. Make sure you visit Peddler Market if you haven’t been and keep an eye out for these guys:
- The Ball Box – Veggie meatball truck
- Chaat cart – Indian street food
- Middle Feast – Veggie kebabs and mezze
- Yakumama – Latin American foodies
- Dim Sum Su – Chinese street food
- Tap Garden – Healthy juices and natural cocktails
- Nether Edge Pizza – Self explanatory and delicious!
- Froconut by Elly Joy – Iron Lady, crazy sweets, guilt free, fabulous pics!
Thank you Paul & Debbie for joining us and thank you for reading,
